I love language and I love stories. I studied writing in school, but I've also discovered a passion for communications in the digital space over the last decade, and I've found a knack for marketing.
Over the years, I have helped dozens of clients develop beautiful e-mail marketing plans, start newsletters, and share their offerings via e-mail.
To honor this aspect of my work, for the last four summers, I’ve taught a cohort of Numinous Newsletters, an intro to e-mail marketing course, and every year, I am inspired by the amazing small businesses, practitioners, and writers who appear ready to delve into the magical portal of this digital landscape.
Numinous Newsletters is once again open for registration, and to celebrate, I’ve pulled together my “Ten Tips from a Marketing Witch,” a way to weave magic into your writing, sharing, and marketing.
Ten Tips from a Marketing Witch
Create a container around your social media and marketing. Do not allow yourself to be stolen by it. Put it back in the toolbox at the end of the day.
Treat your work like an altar. Find the balance in what you share, tend to the energy of your work, leave an offering, and listen for guidance.
Infuse your words, posts, and e-mails with spells and blessings that your work finds your people.
Vanity metrics do not equal a successful business. You may have many likes, and yet no one will engage with your business; allow your social media to be a portal into your business. Make sure to diversify how you build your communities. In person is another way to do this!
Work with your friends. Collaborate, make things together, and share local businesses’ offerings!
Be clear in your offering. Create a call to action and invite others to join in.
Look at how others engage with the platforms that you have decided to work on. See how they use the tools and the altar they create. Why do you admire them? Find ways to infuse your work with this energy, and give credit where credit is due.
Go back to the intention. What is your intention for sharing on the space, and is it authentic to your business? You can check the success of your work against this intention and this intention only. Don't compare yourself to the vast internet; you can’t be everyone, nor please everyone, but you can do good work. Be helpful and supportive to those in your circle.
Have fun! Author, activist, and Witch Starhawk once said that the origin of ritual is play. She wrote in The Spiral Dance, “Aspects of Witchcraft rituals may sometimes seem silly to very serious-minded people, who fail to realize that ritual is aimed at Younger Self. The sense of humor, of play, is often the key to opening the deepest states of consciousness. Part of the “price of freedom,” then, is the willingness to play, to let go of our adult dignity, to look foolish, to laugh at nothing. A child makes believe that she is a queen; her chair becomes a throne. A Witch makes believe that her wand has magic power, and it becomes a channel for energy.” So, find a way to enjoy yourself in this digital space. If you’re having fun, those around you are more likely to have fun. Cultivate joy in your communities, and the rest will follow.
Share as an act of service. Create a business that helps others, and it can help ease fears around sharing your work. If you know that what you have to offer is a gift, that’s something to celebrate.
