The Full Moon in Libra illuminates Aries Season on Saturday, April 12th.
Gaetano Gandolfi The Goddess of Justice
Libra is a cardinal air season, meaning it occurs at the beginning of autumn. The sign of Libra is symbolized by the only inanimate object in the zodiac, the divine scales of justice. The symbol is an omega above a straight line, meant to represent these scales, but also conjures the image of a rising or setting sun, a gesture to the etymology of the equinox, equal day and night.
Libra teaches that balance is not always about consistently balancing but how the scales hang in the balance, shifting weight, adapting, and seeking harmony. Libra explores a measured approach. What some people might interpret as indecision from Libra placements is instead a deep honoring of all the decisions presented. With fairness, Libra sees all sides. Astrologer Liz Greene writes, “In the scale of justice, a Libra weighs not only the facts but also the intent.” Libra loves justice and will fight for everyone to feel empowered.
Venus rules Libra, and because of this, Libra expresses and embodies Venusian principles. Venus, the Roman Goddess of love, is associated with the Greek Aphrodite, the Goddess who emerged from the sea. These Goddesses are known for presiding over love in all its forms. Libra loves beauty and loves our beautiful world.
Under this full moon, write your wild poems, visit the sea in your dreams, honor the goddess, fight to protect our earth, and remember that what makes us fierce and feral also makes us beautiful.
Writing Prompts for the Full Moon in Libra
Audre Lorde writes, “Only by learning to live in harmony with your contradictions can you keep it all afloat.” Under this full moon, celebrate your contradictions. The moon can remind us of our inherent wholeness, especially as she shines in the sky's dark. There is so much beauty to be found in the area in-between, the grey areas of life where we are “both and.” Write a piece dedicated to your contradictions and see how they bring beauty to your life. Begin with, “Dear contradictions…”
The moon and the ocean are deeply connected, as are Aphrodite and the sea, and all of these stories are woven into creativity. Terence Mckenna writes, “The creative act is a letting down of the net of human imagination into the ocean of chaos on which we are suspended, and the attempt to bring out of it ideas. It is the night sea journey, the lone fisherman on a tropical sea with his nets, and you let these nets down - sometimes, something tears through them that leaves them in shreds and you just row for shore, and put your head under your bed and pray. At other times what slips through are the minutiae, the minnows of this ichthyological metaphor of idea chasing. But, sometimes, you can actually bring home something that is food, food for the human community that we can sustain ourselves on and go forward.” Under the full moon, put your creative net into the water, place a hand beneath the surface metaphorically, or in your dreams, wade in up to your knees and close your eyes. Write this scene between you and the ocean, and then see what ideas rise through the waters to visit with you.
Libra has an eye for aesthetics and beauty. Write a list of things that you find beautiful. They can be objects, people, or places, but the more specific, the better. Consider the way the Redbud blooms against a blue sky, the look on your dog’s face before a walk, and the way a candle crackles while you’re writing. Poet Ross Gay writes, “The more stuff you love the happier you will be.” Craft a piece of writing as an ode or dedication to one of these beautiful aspects of your life.
