This week is a new moon in Pisces. Taking place on Thursday, February 27th, this is the final New Moon before the Spring Equinox.
This is a lunation that guides us to embrace the darkness of winter one last time, the deep waters, before the season changes and the eclipse season arrives in two weeks, like a lightning bolt in a spring storm.
With so much planetary attention on Pisces, these stars are asking us to pay attention to all that is watery, dream-like, visionary, and poetic. The stars are asking us to get curious, to create possibility, and tend to all those dreams inside of us before the spring. If you feel grief, exhaustion, or hopelessness, turn to the water; the water always knows and listens.
In Traditional Astrology, Neptune is the planetary ruler of Pisces, and Neptune is a planet that knows all that is murky. One aspect of Neptune is the dreamer, while another is delusion. In mythology, Neptune is the Roman God of the Sea. The son of Saturn and Ops and brother to Jupiter, Neptune, with his trident, rules the watery deep. Often seen in a chariot drawn by creatures of the waters, Neptune would rise, giving a signal through the trumpet of a conch shell.
In Modern Astrology, Jupiter is the planetary ruler of Pisces, a planet of growth, abundance and expansion. In Roman myth, Jupiter rules the realms of the sky. Jupiter, like the Greek Zeus, was represented as a powerful, paternal god who wielded thunderbolts and a scepter. Jupiter presides over the expanse of the horizons and all in between.
It's no surprise that these two planets have both been considered necessary in the realms of Pisces. This week, we may find ourselves feeling like we're underwater. But when you plan to descend into the deep, there is often treasure to be found. As you reflect on the season that has passed and will soon be over, this moon phase asks you to consider what you have learned. Consider what work you have been doing under the surface before you seed these new beginnings. Lean on your spirituality and divinity. You are divine. You are whole.
Writing Prompts for the New Moon in Pisces
“For whatever we lose (like a you or a me),/It's always our self we find in the sea,” wrote e.e. cummings. Close your eyes and picture a vast ocean. If you wade into the depths and find yourself surrounded by the water, what might you see of yourself there? The sea has been waiting for you to return; look through the light-streaked water and discover.
Name one thing in your life you’d like to release to the waters of Pisces season. Maybe it’s a creative block, a self-judgment, or a situation you’re ready to put the seal on. Water can help you alchemize this. In its place, call in or conjure an intention for spring. Imagine it arriving to you on a gentle wave, a friendly river, or through a healing spring rain. What are you dreaming about now, plotting, and planning for, that you can bring to a realization to begin with the spring equinox? How can this water imagery give life to your dreams as seeds?
Pick a favorite water-dwelling creature and write an ode, letter, or a poem dedicated to them. What might this being teach you about connecting with the element of water? Hint: Dolphin, sea star, starfish, crawfish, minnow, crab, lobster, shark, orca, sturgeon.
